3 get life term for lynching Sikhs in Delhi 1984 riots
The judge rejects the prosecution plea for death penalty saying theirs was not the rarest of rare crimes.
A Delhi court on Thursday sentenced three people to life imprisonment on charges of killing a Sikh policeman, his son and son-in-law during the November 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the capital.
Additional Sessions Judge Rajendra Prasad sentenced Harprasad Bhardwaj, RP Tiwari and Jagdish Giri on charges of lynching to death Head Constable Niranjan Singh and two male members of his family and later setting ablaze their bodies.
The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 on each of the convicts.
The judge sentenced the trio to life in jail rejecting the prosecution plea for death sentence, ruling that the case did not fall in the category of the rarest of rare cases.
The anti-Sikh violence had erupted in Delhi and other parts of the country in the wake of assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh security personnel on Oct 31, 1984.
