66,317 polling stations sensitive: EC

The EC has identified as many as 66,317 polling stations as sensitive including 22,585 as hyper-sensitive LS constituencies.

The Election Commission has identified as many as 66,317 polling stations as "sensitive" including 22,585 as "hyper-sensitive" in 140 Lok Sabha constituencies in 16 States and Union Territories going to polls on Tuesday.

Bihar and Jharkhand top the chart with about 80 per cent of the polling booths declared as sensitive or hyper-sensitive, according to statistics released by the EC.

Gujarat and Karnataka follow these two states in these two categories, while Andaman and Nicobar Islands having no sensitive or hyper-sensitive booths.

In Jammu and Kashmir, where elections would be held for two parliamentary seats in the first phase, 954 and 508 polling booths have been termed as sensitive and hyper-sensitive respectively.

Almost three-fourths of 15,261 polling booths in Bihar have been put in the category, with 5,666 booths being declared sensitive and 6,369 as hyper-sensitive.

Of the 7,748 booths in Jharkhand, 2,346 have been declared as sensitive and 4,322 as hyper-sensitive. Banned naxalite organisations, who have already given a poll-boycott call, have announced a state-wide bandh on April 20 and 26, when the polls would be held in the state.

In Gujarat, 10,492 out of a total of 36,826 booths have been described as sensitive, but not a single booth has been termed as hyper-sensitive.

In Karnataka, which is also going for simultaneous assembly polls, 6,849 and 5,800 booths have been declared as sensitive and hyper-sensitive out of a total of 22,999 booths.
