7 held for attempting to burn effigy in Coimbatore

Seven members of Adi Tamizhar Peravai, an organisation fighting for the cause of Dalits, were arrested in Coimbatore while attempting to burn the effigy of Puthiya Tamizhakam president.

They were protesting his reported remarks on separate reservation for Arundhatiyars, one of the dalit communities in Tamil Nadu.

Adequate number of police were deployed near the District Collector's office, after receiving information that the Peravai workers had planned to burn the effigy.

As the workers reached the venue,police blocked them and snatched the effigy.

The Peravai was angered over some remarks reportedly made by Krishnasamy during the recent all party meeting at Chennai convened by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi,police said.
