Schools counsel students about career options if they fall short of magic figure

Schools in the Capital are increasingly trying to break the ‘90 per cent only’ mindset of their students. To bring down stress level both among students and parents schools have taken to introducing different career options for students well before they sit for the Board exam.

“The career counselling that we had in school after the pre-Boards has helped me in keeping my options open,” said Samridhi Sagar, a Class XII student from DAV School, Srestha Vihar. “I am applying for a seat in medicine and would have never thought of applying for physiotherapy too.”

But the counsellor made me understand that I should not restrict myself to just one option. The same is true for the average and below average students who fail to understand that they may not achieve a 90 per cent.

“My school counsellor said even with a second division, I still had a chance to pursue a career,” said Alok (name changed on request), a Commerce student from Amity International School, Saket. Counsellors are subtly preparing the ground for weak students to accept the reality of their results.

“No matter how aware you are of your ability, bad marks still come as a shock,” said Vithika Rahul of Birla Vidya Niketan. “The stress level is frightening,” said Jyoti Bose, principal of Springdales, Dhaula Kuan. The key, academicians believe, is to encourage students to aim for the best, but also know what else is there if the best evades them.
