In an all out campaign to save Kerala from power cutS this summer, the LDF government and Kerala State Eelectricity Board (KSEB) have roped in the services of religious heads to spread the message of prudent use of electricity at peak hours.
The word spread through temples, churches and mosques against THE misuse of power would have saved 100 to 150 MW in the last month alone, according to KSEB sources. “All religious heads we approached have been supportive of the idea and its results are quite encouraging,” a spokesperson of Electricity Minister A.K. Balan said.
In many churches across Kerala, the message was read out before congregations during the Holy Week observance ahead of Easter. Similarly, organisers of major temple festivals made announcements and printed leaflets highlighting the need to avoid excessive use of power during summers, when storage levels in reservoirs dip.
Relying heavily on its hydel sources, managing the summer season has always been a tough task for KSEB. Of late, the state’s power scenario has turned darker with drastic cut in its share from the central pool.
