Lawyers representing Dr Rajesh Talwar and his wife Nupur questioned forensic expert BK Mahapatra on the DNA matching and procedures for arriving at conclusions during forensic examinations in the trial following the murders of teenager Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj.
The major part of Friday’s cross-examination was related to Aarushi’s bedsheet and several vaginal smear-related micro slides.
The lawyers asked Mahapatra why the DNA samples on the slides could not be matched against samples taken from Aarushi’s bedsheet. Referring to short tendoms (a term used during tests) found in slides and the bedsheet, he said it was not established that repeated short tendoms found in the linens were also found in the slides, too.
“On the basis of tendom-repeat match, it cannot be said that both had common DNA. Possibility of common DNA in the slides and the bedsheet cannot be ascertained. Only if the slides were related to Aarushi, and the bedsheet had Aarushi’s blood, the DNA profiles of both would match,” he said.
On August 14, Mahapatra had said no conclusive DNA profile was generated from four slides.
The defence also questioned Mahapatra over eight exhibits which he had examined but were not brought up before the court. He said that these were not relevant to the case and not relied upon by the prosecution.
The cross-examination will continue on Monday.
