Abdullah quits Sonawar constituency

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah resigned from the Sonawar assembly seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha.

Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Mohammad Akbar Lone accepted the resignation of Abdullah yesterday and declared the seat vacant, Secretary of the assembly M Ramzan said today.

Abdullah, who was elected to the state assembly from two constituencies of Hazratbal and Sonawar, had earlier resigned from the Hazratabal constituency.

Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad had resigned from the Bhaderwah assembly seat earlier after he was declared elected unopposed to the Upper House.

With this, three seats have fallen vacant in the 89-member state legislature.

Following the resignations, the strength of coalition partners of NC and Congress has come down to 43 with NC 27 and Congress 16. However, the coalition has a support of three allies and three Independents in the House.
