Samad, who hails from Bhatkal village in Karnataka, was arrested by the Anti terrorism Squad of Maharashtra and was said to be the prime suspect for the German Bakery blast in Pune in February this year which had claimed 17 lives.

The Union Home Minister had issued a press statement on May 25 saying, "I compliment ATS Maharashtra, the Pune Police and central agencies for apprehending the prime suspect within 100 days of the incident."

However, the compliments turned into a word of caution when the Home Minister presented the report card for his ministry for the month of May.

"On May 25, 2010, ATS Maharashtra arrested one of the prime suspects in the Pune blast case. I wish to impress upon everyone that the arrested person, at this stage, is only a suspect and hence this information should be treated with circumspection," Chidambaram said.

It appeared that the ATS may have had jumped the gun by informing the Centre about possible involvement of Abdul Samad in the German Bakery blast in Pune.

However, his production in a 2009 arms case before Mazgaon Metropolitan Magistrate left several questions unanswered.

Samad had been arrested in Mangalore in 2008 in connection with the Bangalore blasts but was let off due to lack of evidence after which he went to Dubai.

The ATS is also on the look-out for Yasin Bhatkal, a relative of Riyaz Bhatkal, founder of terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM).
