AGP President not to contest elections
Brindabon Goswami announced that he would not contest the assembly elections, but work for ensuring the victory.
Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) President Brindabon Goswami on Wednesday announced that he would not contest the assembly elections in Assam, but work for ensuring the victory of the party.
"After assessing the situation and discussing it with senior party colleagues, I have decided not to contest, but will work to ensure the party's victory in the forthcoming polls," Goswami told reporters in Guwahati.
The AGP chief said his services were needed in all constituencies instead of his own to ensure that the party came to power by defeating the Congress.
Party General Secretary Dilip Saikia and Lok Sabha MP Dr Arun Sarma who were present on the occasion said that though Goswami would not contest, he would remain the party's chief ministerial candidate.
Goswami represents the Tezpur assembly constituency in the outgoing assembly.
