Andhra tense over terror arrest
Hyderabad police have set up pickets in many sensitive areas and stepped up patrolling in the wake of tension, reports Ashok Das.
The police have set up pickets in many sensitive areas of the Old City of Hyderabad and stepped up patrolling in the wake of tension in the Saidabad area after a Muslim youth, Mohtasim Billah, was taken into custody for possessing seditious Jehadi literature and causing rioting.
The police also arrested 24 women, who attacked and ransacked the Saidabad police station protesting the arrest of Billah.
City Police Commissioner B Prasada Rao said that Billah has six cases pending against him, including a case of rioting for participating in the attack on a Gujarat police team near the AP director-general of police's office in 2004. He was also wanted in connection with a conspiracy case for possessing seditious Jehadi literature and CDs.
The police claimed Billah, a 21-year-old engineering student, is a close associate of Riazuddin Nasir, a city-based terror suspect, who was arrested by Karnataka police. He is also alleged to be associated with the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
Task force personnel picked up Billah from his house. Later, a group of burqa-clad women, led by his family members, stormed and ransacked Saidabad police station demanding his release. They also beat up women home guards.
Additional forces were rushed to the police station and the 24 women agitators were arrested on charges of attacking police personnel and damaging government property, East Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police T Prabhakar Rao said.
