Arrested ULFA cadre reveals hijack plan
The police on Monday arrested Lachit Bordoloi in Moran in Dibrugarh district in connection with the ULFA hijack plot, reports Digambar Patowary.
Assam Police has intensified its crackdown against the ULFA after a member of the banned outfit confessed that the militants had planned to hijack a plane from the international airport in Borjhar here.
The police on Monday arrested Lachit Bordoloi in Moran in Dibrugarh district in connection with the ULFA hijack plot.
Bordoloi is the convener of Mass (Manab Adhikar Suraksha Samiti), a human rights group. He was one of the nine members of the ULFA-constituted PCG (Peoples Consultative Group) for facilitating peace talks between the central government and the militant outfit.
The Guwahati Police on Monday arrested Suman Das, an employee of Shija Tours, the ground handling agent of a private airline.
The police said Suman attended a meeting with a top ULFA leader in Delhi in November.
"Suman, along with three ULFA cadres went to New Delhi and met a top leader of the banned outfit. There they chalked out a detailed strategy to hijack a plane from the international airport", said Debajit Deuri, Additional SP (City).
Assam Police IG (Special Branch) Khagen Sarma confirmed that the top ULFA leader who arrived in New Delhi in November for a meeting to plan the hijack was the foreign secretary of the outfit, Sasha Choudhuri.
It may be noted that Interpol had issued a Red Corner Notice on Choudhuri.
On Sunday evening, the police detained a senior advocate of the Gauhati High Court, Nekibur Zaman in connection with ULFA's plan to hijack a plane. The police seized Zaman's mobile handset. Most of the cases handled by Zaman in the Gauhati High Court were those of the banned outfit.
A team of the Intelligence Bureau interrogated Zaman in a private hospital here. Zaman was hospitalised after his leg broke while he tried to escape from the police's attempts to arrest him early on Sunday.
Assam Police's intelligence chief said the hijacking was in the planning stage. Some 20 cadres were involved. "They were imparted training in an ULFA camp in Baska district. Some foreigners were training them on plane hijacking," said Sarma.
