STRUGGLING TO keep the campus ruckus-free and the admission process free of disruptions from agitating mob of students, the Allahabad University (AU) administration has now turned to the district administration to ensure peace on its various campuses.
AU Proctor Prof Jata Shankar has approached the district police chief with a formal request for deployment of additional cops and security personnel on AU campuses to ensure that administrative as well as academic activities can go on normally in the university for the benefit of the students.
The decision to approach the district administration was taken following repeated disruptions of the post graduate admission process that is on in the various departments of AU. Student leaders along with their supporters have been visiting the departments one after the other almost daily for the past two weeks and forcing the staff and the teachers to stop all work. The students are agitating against the varsity's decision to admit students only against its sanctioned strength of seats for the forthcoming academic year.
Anger is brewing among the AU teachers as the student leaders are continuing with their agitation despite the matter being reported by them to the varsity's grievance committee and the Vice-Chancellor empowered to act as per the committee members' recommendations. The teachers, especially many a head of the departments, are also sore over the failure of the varsity administration to keep the trouble makers out of the campus and provide them with adequate security.
Following formal complaints about the disruptions from various departments including the Hindi department on Friday and HoD (Hindi) Prof SP Mishra making it clear that he will not be able to resume admissions till adequate security is provided, the Proctor met the AU VC Prof Rajen Harshe and got the approval.
The AU Proctor said, "We are determined not to let the work disrupted and the trouble-makers will be dealt with sternly.”
