Sajid had everything going for him — a good job, good money and employers who were pleased with his work. He could clearly have gone places. But even after 10 years, he could not make Jeddah home because he missed his family in Hyderabad.

So, he kissed his career goodbye and bought a one-way ticket home. Back in Hyderabad, he settled down to a life of serendipity. For a few year, life was good.

But fate had something else in store for him. On Friday, the 35-year-old went to pray at the Mecca Masjid but found the area crawling with devotees. So, he sat down in the first empty space he could find, near the wazukhana (water tank). And felt the full impact of the bomb planted near the tank.

Sajid’s widow is in state of shock. “What will happen to her and their three daughters? Who will take care of them? He was the sole bread winner,” says his father Akram Ali Khan.

Just a lane away from Sajid’s house, another family is coping with the death of the only earning member. Salim, a businessman, has left behind two wives, four children, old parents and dependant brothers. He had gone out to get medicines for his mother and was caught in the melle that followed the blast. A police bullet hit him in the chest; death was instantaneous. “Who will take care of me and my children,” wails his wife Zainath Begum. The family hopes the government will provide a job to one of the dependants.
