HSADL in-charge director Dr H K Pradhan said that nothing conclusive could be said as of now but the final results would be known in a week.

H K Pradhan today said he was yet to receive samples from Assam. “However, I did peruse a newspaper report that spoke of about 1,000 birds dying in the north-eastern State,” the expert told UNI today.

Dr Pradhan said on February 18, H5N1 was found in three samples from Navapur while six of the 13 samples from Uchchal were absolutely confirmed to contain the virus.

“Several samples are reaching the lab these days but the maximum number is from Maharashtra. So far, there has been no example anywhere in the world of human-to-human transmission of H5N1. Poultry samples from Indore are also being analysed,” he added.

Meanwhile, the HSADL, the little known lab to people even in Bhopal till just a few days back, has become a centre of hectic activity ever since the first bird flu positive results were announced.

In merely a fortnight from February 18, the day the first bird-flu-positive case in India was declared, the laboratory has received thousands of dead chickens and other poultry suspected to have been killed by the deadly virus.

The laboratory’s work assumes critical significance in the light of the possibility of the bird flu spreading to humans from birds. Dr Pradhan says the laboratory has a major responsibility towards the nation and all possible care is being taken to ensure absolutely correct results on each test on every sample.

All MP samples negative so far
ALL THE 523 samples of poultry sent to the HSADL from various districts of MP have tested negative for bird flu. Of these, 205 negative samples are those that were sent to the laboratory in January from districts adjoining Maharashtra and Gujarat. Some results confirmed today have also tested negative. So far the laboratory has received 1940 samples for bird flu testing.

Veterinary Services Commissioner Dr Rajesh Rajoura informed today that there was no prohibition of transportation of poultry products from one district to another within MP or even outside the State.

He added the ban on two poultry units in Jabalpur imposed after filing of a PIL against them in the State High Court has also been lifted now. The Health Department officials informed that there was no bird flu scare in the State till now, yet precautionary steps were being taken to ensure that the situation continued to remain normal.
