Basu, Karat, Buddhadev pay tribute to Biswas

CPI-M patriarch Jyoti Basu, party General Secretary Prakash Karat and West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee were among the steady stream of mourners who paid their last respects to CPI-M politburo member Anil Biswas who passed away in Kolkata on Sunday.
Biswas' body was taken from a private mortuary where it was kept overnight, to his Moulali residence in a flower-bedecked vehicle draped with red flags.
From there his body was taken to the CPI-M state headquarters at Alimuddin Street, where a pall of gloom prevailed.
Party workers wearing black badges with the photo of their departed leader raised the slogan of 'Anil Biswas amar rahe' as a steady stream of mourners paid their tribute to Biswas, regarded as a key party strategist and a deft organiser.
CPI-M politburo member Sitaram Yechuri, CPI general secretary AB Bardhan, film director Mrinal Sen, CITU president MK Pandhe, AITUC General Secretary Gurudas Dasgupta were also among the mourners.
The last journey would start at 4.30 pm from the CPI-M office.
Biswas' body would be taken in a procession to the NRS Medical College and Hospital and handed over to the Hospital authorities as he had pledged it for medical research, party sources said.
