The students of the Bengal Engineering and Science University have withdrawn their relay hunger strike after a one-man commission started its inquiry into the reasons behind repeated student unrest - their key demand.
The Registrar of the University, Biman Bandyopadhyay, on Thursday said that the students had withdrawn their agitation on Wednesday after being assured by the commission of Prof Sparshamani Chatterjee that their grievances would be looked into.
Repeated student agitation and violence have bedeviled the prestigious institution over the years, the latest being the March 19 incident in which two groups of students clashed leading to police being called in by the university authorities to restore peace.
The students, under an umbrella body Independent Consolidation, went on a hunger strike demanding withdrawal of the police and setting up of a commission of inquiry to probe the reasons behind their frequent agitations.
