Bird flu in Burhanpur village

Though sources said that only one sample from the village had tested positive, Animal Husbandry Department Principal Secretary Ranjana Choudhary said that the communiqué of the Central Government did not mention the exact number of positive samples. Simultaneously, samples from six places in the bordering Jalgaon district in Maharashtra were also announced as positive on Tuesday.

The bird flu positive status was officially announced by the State Minister for Animal Husbandry Ramakant Tiwari at a press conference held in Bhopal on Tuesday evening. He said that following the confirmation of the positive case from Burhanpur district, Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in the entire district and the machinery has been put into top gear for action of culling and disposal as per the directives of the Central Government.

Ranjana Choudhary said that it has been decided that 6637 birds – all of the them backyard poultry, would be culled in the radius of 10 km from Icchapur – starting 9 am on Wednesday. About 23 villages fall in this area and all preparations have been made for the culling operations.

Also, disinfection of the houses in all the 23 villages would be carried out. In the villages that fall within three km of Icchapur (seat of disease) all the houses would be sprayed with disinfectants while in the villages in 3-10 km radius the houses with poultry would be disinfected.

Choudhary a veterinary team of the Central Government including Dr Negi, Dr Ahmed and Dr Biswas has already reached the area to monitor the culling and disposal operation while a health team of the Central Government was expected to reach late on Tuesday night to keep watch on the health of the involved personnel and the villagers.

As a preventive steps, the bordering districts like Balaghat and Chhindwara have been put on high alert. Indore is already on high alert. The minister and the PS however said that all preventive steps are in place and thus there is no reason for any panic in the state.

Burhanpur District Collector Ms Suraj Damor said the first batch of samples was sent to the laboratory in Bhopal on March 14 and 15 but they turned out to be negative. However, samples of another batch sent yesterday were confirmed positive today.
