A leader of Orissa's ruling Biju Janata Dal was arrested on Thursday for attacking a journalist in Kendrapada district, says the police.

On Wednesday, Bikram Das, husband of Kendrapada district council chairperson Manjulata Das, allegedly assaulted Suvarnsu Sutar, a scribe of an Oriya daily at Rajkanika village in the district, some 150 kms from Kendrapada.

Acting on Sutar's complaint, police arrested Das and produced him in a court in Kendrapada.

The court rejected his bail petition and remanded him to jail custody, Ratnakar Mallik, a district police officer, said.
