Twenty-six people travelling in an ST bus were saved from falling from a height of 40 feet when the bus hit the railing at Shahad over-bridge.
The driver managed to control the vehicle and avert what would have been a major accident.
This is the fourth such incident on the over-bridge.
KS Bharate, inspector attached with Ulhasnagar police station said, “The accident happened at around 10 pm. The state transport bus was coming from Murbad and was headed towards Kalyan. Driver Jeevan Jadhav lost control of the steering wheel and the bus rammed into the over-bridge railing, with its front wheels suspended in air.”
The police said that in the accident before this four people travelling in a car died after the vehicle fell down from the bridge.
Six months back a Qualis driver also lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the railing while four months back a milk van had fallen from the bridge.
Raja Kamble, an autorickshaw driver, who travels daily on the bridge said, “The bridge is dangerous. It has a very sharp curve, so two vehicles approaching each other don’t know they are until they are face to face and too close. If any vehicle is going even a little fast it’s easy to lose control.”
With the help of a crane the bus was safely removed from the railing but its front portion was completely damaged. The police have registered a case of rash driving against Jadhav.
State transport officials are also conducting an inquiry into the accident.
