As the monsoon rain wreaked havoc across Delhi, Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) Shashi Kant Sharma has ordered an audit of all flood control measures and the city's drainage system.
The order comes on the heels of heavy rain crippling vehicular movement, damaging roads, flooding residential colonies as well as the swanky T3 terminal of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The CAG has ordered the audit for the period ending March 2013 'on a priority basis'.
"The audit report would inter alia, cover various schemes being implemented by the Delhi government for flood control and effective drainage system. The audit will seek information on internal control framework in the government to deal with the situations arising out of flooding and waterlogging," official sources said.
The audit will cover the survey conducted by the government to identify vulnerable areas and corrective action taken. It will also cover the response mechanism devised by the the government to meet unforeseen situations arising out of waterlogging.
The audit will examine the steps taken for coordination among various departments such as the municipal corporations, flood control department, the New Delhi Municipal Council, Public Works Department and the Delhi Jal Board. It will also take stock of the government's plan of action to face such eventualities.
The audit body will examine how the city responds to the warnings of the meterological department. Standard operating procedures adopted by the government and the mechanism for informing/alerting the public about any impending flood or waterlogging challenges will be examined.
