Can Mumbai get any more colder?

Is Mumbai on way to beat its own record of 7.4 degrees Celsius, recorded on January 22, 1962, reports Kiran Wadhwa.

This winter has been a season of new lows for Mumbai's temperature. After the suburbs experienced their coldest February day at 10.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, Friday's temperature took another plunge and Mumbai got its coldest day in 46 years at 8.5 degrees Celsius at 8.30 am. Mumbai was also colder than Delhi, which was at 9.4 degrees Celsius.

So, will Mumbai beat its own record of 7.4 degrees Celsius, recorded on January 22, 1962? Going by what city weather officials are saying, temperatures are expected to fall further.

"Temperatures might drop further. It is snowing up north so northerly winds are very strong. Saturday's temperature will be around 9 degrees Celsius," said K Sathi Devi, director, Regional Meteorology Centre.



The suburbs recorded a minimum temperature of 8.5 degrees Celsius while South Mumbai was at 13.4 degrees Celsius.


What made the day colder was the maximum temperature that dropped to 8 degrees below normal, to 23 degrees Celsius.



"The cold spell will last at least for the next four days. The influence of the northerly winds is mainly over north Konkan," said CVV Bhadram, regional head of the Indian Meteorological Department.



Nashik was the coldest in the state at 5 degrees Celsius while Pune shivered at 8 degrees Celsius. Cold wave conditions have been predicted in parts of north Konkan, north Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat on Saturday night.
