CBI focus on a broker

THE CBI has zeroed in on an influential real estate agent, who brokered the deal and acted as the link between the LDA officers and gullible buyers in the multi-crore Jankipuram plots scam.
“A number of plot/house owners, including a retired Army officer, whose statements have been recorded by the CBI so far, have said that the property was purchased by them through this property dealer,” revealed a source assisting the investigating agency in the probe. The man, who has been identified as Raju Singh, is said to be close to powerful leaders of the Samajwadi Party, especially those of the youth wing of the party.
He (Raju) can be spotted in any major function of the SP in the city and usually moves around in his Tata Safari or Scorpio with the VIP entourage, disclosed the source. No wonder, the property dealer still operates his flourishing property business (or should we say racket) from the same sector of the Jankipuram Housing Scheme from where he is said to have lured most of his customers.
“Singh was a well-known face in those in the LDA and he openly flaunted his proximity to a former LDA joint secretary (now suspended) and one another LDA officer,” said the source.
The CBI, however, is trying to determine the level of LDA officials’ involvement in the scam. The property dealer they feel is just one of the link of the caucus of unscrupulous elements in the LDA without whose help and connivance the fraud would not have been possible. Consequently, the investigating agency has sought a written report from the LDA over the exact status of the 123 plots under its scrutiny on the approved layout plan of the department’s scheme.
A report in this connection has been submitted to the CBI by the three-member team formed by LDA Vice Chairman BB Singh that conducted a physical verification survey of these plots in Sector C, H, G, F and I of Jankipuram housing scheme on Sitapur Road. The team comprised Chief Town Planner CP Sharma, executive engineer BN Singh and assistant engineer RB Sachan. “We have put these plots under three categories. This includes 24 plots that simply do not exist on the scheme’s layout plan and 41 that do not have any number.
Only 58 out of these 123 plots are shown on our layout plan,” said one of the members of this survey team.
