Changes being affected in Kerala Police Act

Changes are being made to Kerala Police Act in the wake of 3 custodial deaths in various state police stations.

State home minister Koderi Balakrishnan on Tuesday informed that the changes are being made to the Kerala Police Act in the wake of three custodial deaths in various police stations in the state.

'These are being made to see that the station house officer in each police station would be held responsible for deaths in custody," said the minister to reporters at Thiruvananthapuram.

He also added the Act would be amended in such a manner that the district judge would inquire into custodial deaths. Appropriate action would be later taken against the station house officer.

"We have already begun discussions with legal experts to see that the Act is amended," said the minister.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) in its 60 days in office has seen three custodial deaths taking place and has caused a lot of uneasiness to the government.

The LDF had highlighted during the assembly polls that while the Congress led United Democratic Front ruled the state from 2001-06, close to 200 custodial deaths had taken place.
