Civic poll: 30 criminals in the fray

Now, the cops are going to take action against the anti-social elements to ensure free and fair elections.

Talking to Hindustan Times, nodal officer of the local bodies election and SP Traffic, Rakesh Singh said that more than two-dozen candidates contesting the election had criminal cases registered against them in different police stations.

“Two candidates, contesting on tickets of major political parties, have been accused of murder and dacoity. Investigations are on in the cases falling under Kotwali police circle,” said Singh.

Ehsan who is contesting on the SP ticket has more than 26 cases registered against him at the Kotwali police station. Baban Dixit of the Congress is accused of murder under the same police circle.

Besides, independent candidates are also not far behind. Prem Kumar Sharma and Mushtaq alias Munna Puncture, contesting in Babupurwa police circle are facing cases under sections 302 and 307 CrPC and the Goonda Act.     

A candidate contesting from Sujatganj ward is accused in more than a dozen criminal cases, registered at the Rail Bazaar police station, Some candidates with tainted characters are contesting in Anwarganj too.

Fearing possibility of violence during the polling, police have started taking preventive measurements. Senior police officials have instructed the SHOs to put such candidates under section 107/16 of the CrPC as they will be under the keen vigil of local intelligence too.
