The Mumbra police are looking for four people who allegedly abducted and tried to rape a 17-year-old Class 10 student from Mumbra on Thursday night. The girl told the police that she was able to escape only because an unknown biker arrived at the spot surprising the men, who fled from the area.

PI Arun Sonde, from the Mumbra police station, said, “Around 8pm on Thursday, the 17-year-old girl was returning from her tuition class and boarded a rickshaw at the share-an-auto service stand.

“The rickshaw had gone some distance when three more passengers got into the vehicle. Two men sat in the backseat, while one of them sat with the driver, sharing his seat.”

When the girl realised that the autorickshaw driver was taking the vehicle on a different route, she tried to shout for help, said police sub-inspector Chihvad Shetty.

But, the men sitting next to her allegedly tried to molest her in the moving vehicle and even assaulted her.

Once the rickshaw came to an area with low traffic, Sonde said, the other men in the rickshaw started molesting the girl. The rickshaw driver then drove the vehicle to a secluded spot in the area. There the four men tried to rape the girl, when suddenly an unknown biker happened to ride by.

The sight of the biker scared the four men, who abandoned the girl at the spot and fled in the rickshaw.

The girl somehow got home and narrated the incident to her parents, who in turn took the girl to the police station and lodged a complaint.

Sonde said the police had registered a complaint based on the girl’s statement and three teams were working on the case, looking for the accused.

The police have registered an offence under sections 366 (abduction), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 323 of the IPC.
