Classical vocalist Gangubai Hangal dies

Doyen of Hindustani classical music Gangubai Hangal died in Kolkata today after a brief illness. Winner of the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards, she mesmerized fans for over six decades with her melodious voice.

Gangubai, 97, was put on life support system last night after her condition turned critical and she breathed her last this morning, Dr Asho Kalamadani, her physician, told PTI.

The end came at 7.10 am, Gangubai's grandson Manoj Hangal said.

The singer is survived by two sons and a daughter.

Gangubai was admitted to the hospital on June 3 but had returned home on July 12. Two days later, she was again admitted to the hospital after she developed respiratory problems.

Gangubai, one of the most acclaimed exponents of Khyal Gayki of the Kirana gharana, was born in a family of professional musicians in Dharwad in Karnataka.

Winner of the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards, she mesmerized fans for over six decades with her melodious voice.
