CM bats for horticulture to strengthen economy

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Monday listed measures and packages his government had put in place to give boost to horticulture and ameliorate the situation of people who are associated with it.

"The horticulture sector is responsible for generating substantial livelihood for people and strengthening the economy. It offers promises for investors," the chief minister said. He urged youths to venture into the sector under the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) programme, for which a package of incentives was available for them.

Talking to a deputation of fruit growers from Shopian in his 'awami mulaqaat' here, the Abdullah said a modern fruit market at Shopian would not only give considerable fillip to the handling and marketing of fruit from this area but ensure remunerative returns for horticulture produce.

The deputation conveyed thanks to the chief minister on the behalf of more than 22,000 families associated with horticulture in Shopian district for granting the modern fruit market to the district, known for the production of apples and other fruits. They extended invitation to Abdullah to visit the area and lay foundation of the new fruit mandi.

"The people of the area want to receive you warmly and welcome you at their place," fruit growers told Abdullah. The deputations from Sopore, Baramulla, Kothar, Achabal and Rajpora extended similar invitations to the chief minister, which he accepted and thanked the people for their love.

Speaking to a deputation of Beopar Mandal, the chief minister said trade and commerce activities nurtured economy and his government was determined to help trade, industries and commerce in the state. "Qualified youths are being provided various incentives to get engaged in trade, commerce and industrial activities to earn respectable livelihood and provide opportunities to others in this regard."

During his interaction with a deputation of All J&K Mochi Traders' Federation, the chief minister said inclusive and equitable development was the benchmark of development policy of his government. He said weaker sections are being focused for holistic development under various programmes.

As many as 74 deputations from across the state and concerning various organisations and associations besides scores of individuals met the chief minister at 'awami mulaqaat', presented their memoranda and sought his intervention in redressing their grievances.

The deputations that met the chief minister included those from Rajouri, Qazigund, Wathura, Shopian Rajpora, Baramulla, Achabal, Kothar, Anantnag, Srinagar, Bemina, Tral, Budgam, Pulwama, Soura, Zadibal, Awantipora, Budgam, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Banihal, Sopore, Samboora, Kupwara and concerned with various unions, associations and auqaf committees.
