Meanwhile, eight workers tunnelling a new mine in central China's Henan province were missing after a gas leak on Saturday, Xinhua said.

Rescuers were pumping fresh air into the unfinished Mengjin Coal Mine to dilute the gas in the shaft but had not yet located the workers, who were believed to be working 765 meters underground when the leak occurred, it said.

China's coal mines are the world's deadliest, suffering more than 5,000 fatalities annually in explosions, floods and other accidents despite repeated government promises to improve safety.
