Congress general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh affairs Madhusudan Mistry chaired the meeting, which was also attended by former Union ministers Salman Khurshid, Sriprakash Jaiswal, Jitin Prasada, RPN Singh, Rajiv Shukla and Pradeep Jain Aditya apart from state chief Nirmal Khatri.

Senior leaders Mohsina Kidwai, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Pramod Tiwari, PL Punia, Pradeep Mathur, and AICC secretaries Prakash Joshi, Zubair Khan and Naseeb Singh, were also present.

“All leaders rejected any coalition politics in Uttar Pradesh and were unanimous in their view that Congress should contest the 2017 elections on its own,” RPN Singh said.

The meeting came in the backdrop of the success of the Bihar experiment where the Grand Alliance comprising Rashtriya Janata Dal, Janata Dal (United) and Congress decimated the BJP-led NDA.

The Congress leaders also deliberated on the “pros and cons” of various prospective partners, including the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) of Mayawati and Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).

In the 2012 UP elections, the Congress had contested on 355 out of the total 403 seats and managed to win just 28 with a vote share of 11.65%. Its alliance partner RLD had fought on 46 seats and bagged nine of them. The RLD vote share stood at 2.33%.

Though the predominant sentiment at the meeting was that to contest alone, Khurshid said much depends on ground realities in the coming future
