The parents of four-month-old girl Khushi, arrested for abandoning the child a few days after she was born, are released on bail.
The parents of four-month-old girl Khushi, arrested for abandoning the child a few days after she was born, were released on bail on Saturday.
Sheila Jaiswal and her husband Raj Mani were arrested last evening and produced before the Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate, who released them on a bail of Rs 2,000 each.
The court directed them to appear before the Shahu Nagar police station every week.
The couple, who reside in the slums of Dharavi in Central Mumbai, had abandoned the new-born at Sion Hospital alleging the hospital authorities had swapped their baby boy with a girl.
In December 2007, Sheila was admitted to the hospital, where she delivered her child. The couple, however, refused to accept that they had a girl and alleged that the hospital authorities had swapped their baby boy with this girl.
Following this, a DNA test was conducted on the child and the mother, the results of which proved that Sheila was Khushi's biological mother.
When the parents were informed about the DNA result, they gave an undertaking to the hospital that they are not taking their child and left the hospital.
The girl, named Khushi by the hospital nurses, is now in the paediatrics ward of the hospital.
