In May 1993, Marsinah, a female labourer in East Java, disappears mysteriously after a workers’ demonstration for wage hike. Three days later. Her body is found in tragic circumstances, laid aside a small shack by a street. Her death leads to suspicion all around. Labourers, factory head and security officers in the area begin accusing each other. The killing – which has happened in a small town and where the murderer could easily have been traced – becomes a long and complex case, since everyone is interested in defending their own image and interests. The Marsinah killing was no ordinary case. It became a matter of politics, law and national defence. The case is not yet over, and no one knows how long it will be before the verdict is out.
