Curfew was relaxed for two hours on Friday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri town following improvement in the law and order situation.
“Curfew was relaxed from 9 am to 11 am in Rajouri town on Friday. Any extension in the relaxation period will depend on the law and order situation,” a senior police official said in Jammu.
Curfew was imposed in Rajouri town after Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists torched a flag of the radical Islamist group, ISIS, in the town on Eid.
Muslims in Rajouri took exception to this action, saying that the flag bore verses of the Quran on it.
State deputy chief minister Nirmal Singh said there was nothing wrong in torching the flag of a terrorist organisation like the ISIS but added that those who torched the flag did not know it had verses of the holy scripture written across.
Muslim protesters clashed with the police on Monday after which the authorities clamped an indefinite curfew in the town.
Elders of the two communities had met on Thursday in the presence of state minister Zulfiqar Chowdhary to defuse tension in the town.
