Amid mounting protests against the movie Dam 999 in Tamil Nadu, chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday banned its release following which the director said he would move the Supreme Court.
Protesters believe the movie is based on the Mullaperiyar Dam in Kerala over which Tamil Nadu has control for 999 years.
The dam is an emotive issue in both states and they are locked in a legal fight over it in the Supreme Court. Dam Divide
"Since it is capable of creating panic over the collapse of the dam and divide people of the two states, the CM has directed banning its screening," chief secretary Debendranath Sarangi said.
Director NRI Sohan Roy, clarified there was no mention of Mullaperiyar in the movie. Roy said from Dubai he planned to approach the Supreme Court.
In a letter to PM Manmohan Singh on Wednesday, Jayalalithaa had urged him to advise Kerala not to whip up fear among people on the issue.
