Delhi Government on Tuesday declared a flood alert and ordered the evacuation of people in the Capital's low-lying areas as the level of the Yamuna rose close to the danger mark following the release of a large quantity of water by Haryana.
Haryana released 1,56,237 cusecs of water into the Tajewala barrage, causing the water level at the Old Yamuna Bridge to rise to 203.97m during the day.
The water level was expected to cross the danger mark of 204.83m later on Tuesday night, officials said adding the Government has declared an alert in the low-lying areas on the banks of the river and ordered the evacuation of residents from those places.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Flood Control and Irrigation department and chaired by minister Raj Kumar Chauhan.
Food packets, cement bags, boats and other necessities have been readied for distribution, the officials said.
