People preferred to remain indoors, apprehending a confrontation between police and HYV activists.

State HYV secretary Pramod Singh, district unit president Neeraj Shahi and their supporters took out a procession and appealed to traders to pull down their shutters in support of their demands.

They raised anti-government slogans, while passing through Malviya Road, Motilal Road, Court Road, Jal Kal Road, Sabzi Mandi and other areas. Sources said schools and colleges were also closed.

The HYV activists handed over a memorandum to the ADM Finance and demanded immediate arrest of the accused in the case.

State HYV office-bearers Ram Laxman and Rakesh Singh Pahelwan visited Manish Singh’s residence to console his bereaved family members. Meanwhile, police registered a case against Mangal Singh, Suraj Singh, Dangal Singh and another person on the written complaint of Manish’s father Subhash Singh. Sources said there was a minor dispute between two groups over collection of money from taxi drivers at the Kasia Taxi Stand of the district, which resulted in the killing of Manish.

One group had been helping drivers pick up passengers. They charged money, known as rangdari tax in local parlance, from taxi drivers for allotting numbers to them.

A dispute arose a month ago when Manish Singh openly came out in support of one group.

On Sunday, an unidentified miscreant shot dead Manish. The incident shocked the entire city.

The superintendent of police, Deoria, along with other police officials intensified patrolling and sounded an alert to avert any untoward incident.

Since the assailants were members of the same community as Manish, there was no communal tension. However, traders preferred to close their shops as a precaution.
