Devotees offer puja to sun

A LARGE number of devotees offered ‘argh’ to the setting sun on the bank of river Ganga in Varanasi on Saturday as part of Chhath (Surya Shashthi) festival.Ganga ghats were over-crowded with devotees. Amid religious folk songs, devotees, that included women, started thronging the river bank since noon. The devotees were also carrying baskets on their heads while heading towards different ghats.
The devotees took holy dip in the river and offered ‘argh’ (Ganga jal) to the setting sun. Devotees, especially mothers, observed fast for the longevity and prosperity of their sons. The devotees will also offer puja to the rising sun on Sunday morning.
Meanwhile, prices of fruits increased considerably in view of the puja. Thousands of make-shift shops of different fruits and sugarcane had been set up in different localities.
Surja Shashthi Mahotsava Samiti of Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) organised a Surya Shashthi Mahotsava at Surya Sarovar in DLW on Saturday afternoon.
Recital of Hanuman Chalisa and Sunderkand and other religious events were held on the occasion.
