Ostensibly a gift for her 30th birthday, which she celebrated "Beck-less", the present ranks as one of the most expensive peace offering between husband and wife. But, after two weeks of lurid details in Tabloids of his alleged affairs with two women, Posh is said to be at breaking point.

Past offerings of pink diamonds failed badly to provide support to faltering relations. Actor Ben Affleck gave a pink diamond to Jennifer Lopez, two years ago when she was to be his wife-to-be. They never made it to the altar, damaging thereby the stone's reputation as a symbol of eternal love.

It happened to Brad Pitt too. He bought a £25000 diamond ring for Gwyneth Paltrow after falling in love. But she returned the ring after four months, without even offering any explanation. She married British pop singer Chris Martin while Pitt tied the knot with Aniston, of the TV serial Friends fame.

A £40,000 engagement ring given by Nicolas Cage to Lisa Marie Presley could not save the alliance. Their marriage broke up in four months. Then there is the case of Naomi Campbell, the most famous model. She swore to stay forever with Adam Clayton, the bass player with the U2 band. But despite a £40,000 diamond ring, Clayton could not allegedly resist spending £1500 on prostitutes.

Cases of Elizabeth Taylor and Zsa Zsa Gabor are too well known. Gabor is quoted saying she could never hate a man enough to give him back his diamonds. Diamonds could not save Liz Taylor and Richard Burton's repeated efforts to remain married.

Columnists in the Telegraph have added insult to the injury by reminding Beckham that a man buys three diamonds, the first for his bride to be (Victoria wears a £120,000 diamond engagement ring), the second for his mistress and the third for his wife when she finds out about the second.

After this one can be sure about tabloids and TV networks flashing chequebooks to make Loos and Sarah reveal if they got a diamond ring from Beckham. If either of them did, the £1 million gift to his wife by David Beckham would sink without shining on her finger.

Diamonds are apparently not forever. The history of Kohinoor says it ll. The British Royalty it is said cut it two to keep away its evil manifestations.
