Direct funding for PRIs sought in Meghalaya
Three traditional institutions of the Dorbar Shnong, Raid and Hima regions in Meghalaya have sought CM DD Lapang's intervention for direct funding to local bodies.
Three traditional institutions of the Dorbar Shnong, Raid and Hima regions in Meghalaya have sought Chief Minister DD Lapang's intervention in initiating direct funding to local bodies in a bid to ensure transparency and accountability in matters relating to development and other related efforts.
All the three local bodies have huge influence on the state's rural populace and have been promoting the idea of allotting five per cent of the state's budgetary allocation for a 'village dorbar scheme' that would be community driven, devoid of politics.
In a faxed message to the state's Chief Minister, spokesperson of the federation of Khasi state, John F Kharshing said that the state government should hand over power to the rural people by implementing the direct funding pattern, with the help of the Dorbar Shnongs, which in Meghalaya are considered equivalent to gram panchayats.
He also referred to the southern state of Karnataka, which gained from the implementation of direct funding to the panchayats, after Congress President Sonia Gandhi endorsed the Belur Declaration, aimed at strengthening urban local bodies and Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs).
