"We have 300 associate professors, lecturers and doctors from the public health services taking care of our indoor and emergency cases," NE Yeolekar, Dean of civic-run King Edward Memorial Hospital, told PTI.

"Our outpatient attendance has reduced drastically. Only 146 patients were attended today in contrast to 4,000 per day usually," he said.

There are about 673 indoor patients, and 21 operations were carried out today, Yeolekar said, adding he hoped the issue of the increase in number of seats for Post Graduate courses, the reason for the stir, is resolved soon.

This makeshift arrangement was seen in other city hospitals also but the authorities said this cannot go on for a long time and the resident doctors should return to their duties soon.

Medical teachers are wearing black badges in support of the doctors' demand for more seats in PG courses. They plan to join the stir, which entered the fifth day today, if the issue was not resolved soon.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Government is in the process of issuing notices to all the striking resident doctors across the state to resume work by 8 pm today.

Chief of Directorate of Medical Education and Research WB Tayde told PTI that state-run medical colleges are being told to issue notices to the striking doctors.
