Don't defend terrorists
With reference to the report Despair & hope (September 28), how long will innocent lives continue to be sacrificed at the altar of ostensible secularism to feed the demon of vote-bank politics?
With reference to the report Despair & hope (September 28), how long will innocent lives continue to be sacrificed at the altar of ostensible secularism to feed the demon of vote-bank politics? In the fear psychosis created by the recent
blasts, the common man seems to be waiting with bated breath for the next round. The Home Minister prepares his usual updesh, while the Jamia V-C is arranging more funds to defend the accused. How do we fight terrorism when those supposed to counter the message of hate are the ones fanning the fire? We need more action, not empty promises.

Terrorists are becoming bolder, given the complicated judicial processes, and the impotence of our politicians. Ordinary law-abiding citizens fear to come out in public places, while terror-mongers continue to dare the authorities. We have had enough of debates on terror, now it is time to act tough and send a strong message of zero tolerance for such crimes.

Apropos of the report Arjun Singh backs Jamia V-C Hasan (September 27), it’s a pity that HRD Minister Arjun Singh has supported the latter’s decision to give legal aid to the two Jamia students arrested on charges of terrorist activities. Even if the boys are not terrorists, then who fired four shots on Inspector M.C. Sharma at Batla House, where the accused were living? Singh has failed to show sympathy to the family of the slain inspector who sacrificed his life. It is time for the PM to drop him from the Cabinet and save his own image.

All violence goes against the spirit of humanity and any defence against it is shocking. In showing mercy to the merciless, our politicians, and the Jamia Millia Islamia V-C have revealed themselves for what they are: unwilling to deal with terror. If they have an abundance of sympathy, they should reserve it for the innocent victims and not for the terrorists.

Corrupting the future
Apropos of the editorial Bang for the buck (The Pundit, September 27), India’s ranking at 85 out of 180 countries on Transparency International’s yardstick of corruption is an insult to the potential of the country. It is a matter of shame that while bright Indians earn fame in foreign countries, their potential is often ignored in India.

Disgrace for Indian sport
The report Cheque de India: Hockey body doesn’t pay (September 27) is one of the most shocking and disgraceful incidents in the history of Indian sport, especially with regards to hockey, which is our national game. The India Hockey Federation and the Sports Ministry are responsible for this and should not be pardoned. We should be grateful to HS Chouhan who saved our players in Australia from such an ugly situation. All sports-loving people appeal to the authorities to please wake up to their mistakes.
