Ace detective Huang Huo-tu is falling apart. He pays for blowing the whistle on corruption in the force, and is relegated to the do-nothing job of Foreign Affairs Officer. His fellow policemen have turned on him, and his wife is filing for divorce. Just then, three grisly murders shake up the department. The victims are unrelated, but the coroner finds a mysterious black fungus in their brains, along with evidence that they had all died in a hallucinatory state. The police are unequipped to handle the case, and the high command calls on the country’s closest ally, the United States, for help. Huang begins working with an FBI expert. They find a pattern to the murders in an ancient and obscure Taoist diagram …

Director's bio-note:
Born in 1958, Chen Kuo-Fu was a noted film critic, author, festival programmer and magazine editor before directing his first feature, School Girl, in 1989. His critically acclaimed second feature, Treasure Island (1993), premiered in competition at the Locarno festival. He has also directed television documentaries, music videos and stage plays. His films include The Peony Pavilion (1995) and The Personals (1999). The latter film, shown at Cannes, Toronto and Rotterdam, received Taiwan’s Golden Horse Grand Jury Prize.
