SK Vij, dean, students’ welfare at DU, said the university would have to seek help from the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Human Resource Development. He also said the university would need to seek help on how to identify the creamy layer.

The university is supposed to increase 18 per cent seats every year, till the 54 per cent figure is reached. Vij said factors like space in colleges for expansion of classrooms and hostels need to be considered.

Delhi University Teachers’ Association president Aditya Narayan Mishra said it was a positive decision.

IIT-Delhi gears up for more

“We will start working on implementing the quota as soon as the government informs us of the latest decision,” said HC Gupta, deputy director (administration), IIT, Delhi. Gupta said the government had promised to release funds for expansion. “We have already obtained the necessary permission for a boys’ hostel and 96 faculty houses. A new lecture theatre is also being planned,” Gupta said.

Recruitment of teachers would begin in April end, he said.

JNU banks on deprivation points

JNU already takes in 18 to 20 per cent students under its deprivation scheme. So, JNU would need to increase seats by only seven to nine per cent. However, if there is 54 per cent increase in overall seats, it could be a cause for worry. “We had given a concrete plan to the UGC with a requirement of Rs 265 crore. But the UGC said it could give us five to 10 per cent of that amount,”said Vice-Chancellor BB Bhattacharya.

Jamia awaits govt order

Jamia Millia Islamia is waiting for the government order. “It is too early to comment. Once the government communicates its decision, we will discuss the issue” said Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Hasan.
