Roy Padaychee, who is a deputy minister, said the Indian actor would attend a mass rally on Sunday at Chatsoworth in Durban which has a large population of ethnic Indians.

The rally would be addressed by top leaders of the ANC, including Jacob Zuma and Zweli Mkhize. ANC faces its toughest challenge since the end of apartheid in 1994 after the formation of COPE party from the loyalists of ousted president Thabo Mbeki.

Padaychee, one of the organisers of Dutt’s visit, said the actor would also visit the Mahatma Gandhi settlement in Phoenix in Durban and also address an ANC meeting in the township on Sunday.

The controversial actor, who plans to contest parliamentary elections on the ticket of Samajwadi Party from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, will arrive tomorrow in Johannesburg. He will visit the Indian residential areas of Lenasia and Laudium on the same day. Dutt is expected to arrive in Durban on Sunday morning.

The ruling ANC is using the popular actor to woo the Indian-origin voters as many of them have become disillusioned with the ruling party following its failure to curb rising violent crimes and unemployment.

Earlier this week, a 55-year-old woman and two young girls of Indian ethnic origin were raped in their home in the township of Northdale in Pietermaritzburg. This is the latest in a series of violent crimes targeting the minority community in South Africa.
