“It was a very student-friendly and well-balanced paper that included application based and high order thinking questions. None of the questions were out of syllabus,” said Fauziya Umar, who teaches English at Springdales School, Pusa Road.

Some students, however claimed that while the paper was easy to attempt, questions in the language section did not test their writing or imagination skills — contrary to what has been taught to them in school.

"While the paper was quite easy, the language section could have been much better. Questions on the article, speech and letter writing were vague. They focused on topics such as yoga and writing to the librarian to cancel membership. They were textual, and did not test us intellectually," said Ritwik Shukla, a student of Sardar Patel Vidyalaya.

Teachers said that the questions in the language section were simple, which is why they did not come across as challenging enough.

“Questions on writing articles, letters and the speech section were pretty simple as compared to what students have been trained to handle in schools,” added Umar. Students also said that questions in set 1 of the English core paper were more time consuming than the other two sets, while the literature section proved to be straightforward and text-based.

“Set 1 was lengthier than set 2 and 3, but no question was out of syllabus. If you had read the texts well, all questions were manageable,” said Neha Joshi, a student of Navy Children School.

Students of Class 10, who have opted for the Boards, began the process with painting examination on Thursday.

Their last examination will be social science, to be held on March 26.
