An FIR had been filed against Nishad and 60 of his men for the murder of Constable Krishnanand Rai following an altercation between them at Maharajganj Kotwali on Saturday night.

Nishad had been promptly dropped from the cabinet next morning, but Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav had insisted Mayawati was protecting him. By her swift action Mayawati has taken the wind out of his sails.

Mayawati followed up the arrest with a meeting of all BSP MLAs and MPs where she warned them she would not tolerate any misbehaviour. “Nobody will be allowed to take the law into his hands,” she said. “If they do, they will meet the fate of Jamuna Nishad.”

She is also believed to have pulled up some individual MLAs on the basis of reports of their activities she claimed she had received from her sources in their respective constituencies.
