The Lakme India Fashion Week upheld an annual tradition by beginning fashionably late. The opening show was Delhi designer Rina Dhaka's, and she kept waiting for 45 minutes for the last of her celebrity guests to trickle in.

Dhaka could do precious little, because empty front rows don't look good on television. And celebs have never been known to follow the designer dials of their limited-edition watches. Even the make-up artist assigned for Dhaka's show chose to arrive late.

The designer made up for lost time by recreating a strip club to present a peek-a-boo yet wearable collection, where the innerwear of models was as visible as the body-hugging clothes made from metallic net with gold and silver embossing.

"It's the kind of sexy opening the LIFW needed," said Wendell Rodricks, the Goan style guru. The colourful Rajya Sabha Congress member, T. Subbarami Reddy, said he wouldn't like his daughter to be seen in these clothes. Dhaka maintained that you have to be a "bold now-girl" to wear her clothes.

The day's highlight was the show presented by the monosyllabic Rajesh Pratap Singh, whose kurtas have a big fan following among trendy politicians. The faces of models were covered with translucent black cloth.

The designer didn't want pretty faces to distract his audience. The models didn't seem to mind. Because each time they unpeel one make-up for another, they cause a little more damage to their skin.
