Five IITians honoured

THE DIRECTOR of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-K) conferred the Distinguished Alumni Awards upon four IITians here on Saturday.They are Abhay K Bhushan, Pawan Kumar, Pradeep Jotwani and Umesh K Misra. Abhay Kejriwal, an alumni of the IIT-Kharagpur was, given the Satyendra K Dubey Memorial Award.

They are Abhay K Bhushan, Pawan Kumar, Pradeep Jotwani and Umesh K Misra.  Abhay Kejriwal, an alumni of the IIT-Kharagpur was, given the Satyendra K Dubey Memorial Award.

Abhay Kumar Bhushan was the first batch (1965) of the IIT-K of 1965. He is the chairman of ASquare and on the boards of Point Cross and Mobile Surf, besides being co-holder of 12 US patents on semi-conductors drying and cleaning technology. He is author of the famous book on ‘Business Guide to Waste Reduction and Recycling’. He has been given the award for excellence in entrepreneurship and outstanding contribution to social welfare.Talking to the Hindustan Times, Bhushan said the existing JEE coaching had become an industry where students wasted their valuable years just to know how to get through the examination, while earlier the situation was altogether different as students did not need additional coaching.

Pawan Kumar of the 1972 batch is the president of Scandent Solutions Bangalore. He has been instrumental in making Fujitsu-ICIM, the seventh largest software services export company of India. He is also the founder of vMoksha Ltd.

Pradeep Jotwani of the 97 batch is a senior vice-president and general manager of Hewlett-Packard. He has been given the Distinguished Alumnus Award for his outstanding managerial contributions.

Talking to the HT, he said students should pursue their own passion in choosing their vocation and they should also think of development of society. Besides, he said, efforts should be made to ensure that IIT becomes a global resource so that students from other countries should come for studies here.

Umesh K Misra of the 1979 batch is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Sciences at California University. He was given the Alumnus award for his outstanding contribution in the field of semi conductors and solid state devices.

Arvind Kejriwal of the 1989 batch of the IIT-Kharagpur has been given the Satyendra Dubey Memorial Award for his campaign for ensuring transparency in government and public offices and for getting the Right to Information Bill passed. He joined Tata Steels and in 1992 he joined Indian Revenue Services and was posted in the Income Tax Department. He is the founder of Parivartan, an NGO.
