Port Blair has been chosen as one of the 18 airports from where flights to Thaliand will operate with unlimited frequency and capacity under a new Indo-Thai air agreement
An agreement was signed between the Centre and Thailand in Bangkok on February 10 modifying the existing air services agreement between the two countries to provide for multiple designations of airlines, Andaman and Nicobar Islands' Chief Secretary DS Negi said on Saturday.
Thai Airways, before the revised agreement, operated upto three flights with a capacity of 915 seats per week each to and from Guwahati, Gaya and Varanasi.
Air India had reciprocal entitlements to operate flights filling 2745 seats per week from 18 designations - Patna, Lucknow, Guwahati, Gaya, Varanasi, Bhubaneswar, Khajuraho, Aurangabad, Goa, Jaipur, Port Blair, Cochin, Thiruvananathapuram, Calicut, Amritsar, Vishakhapatnam, Ahmedabad and Tiruchirapalli - to points in Thailand.
As per the new agreement, the designated airlines of both the countries would be entitled to operate unlimited frequency and capacity with any type of aircraft on their respective scheduled routes.
Under the agreement, the designated airlines of Thailand will get unlimited access to and from points in Thailand from these 18 airports.
The agreement is seen as a step to bring Port Blair closer towards being declared an International airport.
