Floods had swamped 19 districts of Assam extensively damaging crops and crippling normal life, officials said in Guwahati.

Brahmaputra and its tributaries rose menacingly at many places as animals in Kaziranga National Park fled following inundation of low-lying areas.

In worst-hit Dhemaji district, swirling waters of Gai and Jiadhol rivers displaced more than 60,000 villagers and disrupted road and rail traffic.

Monsoon was vigorous in North India with incessant rains claiming nine lives in Uttaranchal and Rajasthan.

Sevaral houses were damaged in Garhwal region of Uttaranchal where the water level of most rivers rose alarmingly.

Four people, including two children, were killed and nearly 100 animals perished in heavy rains and flooding in the hill state.

Five rain-related deaths were reported in Rajasthan as heavy downpours in Jodhpur and Udaipur threw normal life out of gear.
