In the backdrop of a rave party busted in Raigad district, an NGO said that growing influence of foreign culture, among other factors, was fuelling such incidents in and around Pune.
Muktangan Mitra, an NGO working for rehabilitation of drug addicts, said that the rising number of students, IT professionals, many of whom are from foreign countries, fuel the rave party tradition.
"Pune has got the highest number of foreign students so their culture and habits are different," Sanjay Bhagat from Muktangan Mitra told PTI in Panaji a few hours after a rave party near Mumbai was busted by the police.
He said that the youths opt for such an "entertainment" as they cannot find other options to kill time on long weekends. In 2009, around 284 people who were the part of Orkut social networking website, were found consuming ketamine in the rave party.
"After their arrest, they underwent compulsory counselling for one month or treatment, depending on the person," Bhagat said. Another party was busted in August 2010 wherein students from Symbiosis Institute of Pune were arrested. "There were no drugs in this party but it was sloshed with hard liquor," he said. All the students were sent for compulsory 150 hours of community services wherein they worked with the families of drug addicts, Bhagat added.
